What Is OEKO-TEX® and What Does It Actually Certify?

If you've seen an OEKO-TEX® label on workwear and assumed it just means "safe," you're broadly right, but it's worth knowing what's actually being tested and why it matters when you're buying for a team.

What is OEKO-TEX®?

OEKO-TEX® is an independent testing and certification body for the textile and leather industry, founded in 1992. Its standards are built to identify products that have been tested for harmful substances and, in some cases, manufactured under sustainable and socially responsible conditions. Today, over 35,000 companies work with OEKO-TEX®, and there are more than 60,000 valid certificates and labels in circulation worldwide.

The standards that matter most for workwear

OEKO-TEX® runs several certifications, but two are most relevant if you're buying clothing and PPE:

STANDARD 100 is the one you're most likely to see. It applies to all types of textiles, from raw yarn through to the finished garment, and covers testing for harmful substances at every stage. If a garment carries this label, every component, not just the outer fabric, has been tested.

MADE IN GREEN goes a step further. It confirms the product has been tested for harmful substances and manufactured in facilities that meet sustainable and socially responsible production criteria. Each MADE IN GREEN label comes with a unique product ID, so you can trace where and how the item was made.

For leather components such as gloves and boots, the LEATHER STANDARD covers the same kind of harmful substance testing, tailored specifically to leather materials and finished articles.

Why it matters

Harmful substance testing isn't just a marketing line. Untested textiles can carry chemical residues from dyeing, finishing, or treatment processes, which matters when a garment is worn close to skin for a full shift, day after day. For safety-conscious procurement, an OEKO-TEX® label gives you a verifiable, third-party checkpoint rather than a manufacturer's own claim.

Verifying a label yourself

Every genuine OEKO-TEX® label carries a certificate number. You can check it's valid and see exactly what it covers using OEKO-TEX®'s own Label Check tool, rather than taking a label at face value.
