What Is Sympatex® and How Does It Work?

Not all waterproof, breathable membranes work the same way. Sympatex® takes a distinctive approach, built around a physicochemical principle rather than a porous structure, and it's worth understanding what that actually means for the kit you're buying.

How the Sympatex® membrane works

Sympatex® has no pores at all. Instead of tiny holes letting water vapour escape, the membrane works on a physicochemical principle: water vapour molecules move outward along hydrophilic molecular chains built into the material itself. The driving force is a partial pressure gradient, created by the difference in temperature and humidity between the inside and outside of the garment.

The membrane also responds dynamically. As humidity rises, the hydrophilic structure swells and opens up more capacity for vapour to pass through. As conditions dry out, it adjusts back. The result is a membrane built to stay waterproof, windproof, breathable, and durable throughout.

Built with recycling in mind

Sympatex® is made from a polyester-based plastic, the same type of material used in PET bottles, which means it can be recycled through existing, established routes. The stated goal is to move toward using only recycled material in future production, closing the loop from old garments back into new ones rather than starting from raw material each time.

For buyers weighing up sustainability claims, that's a concrete, checkable detail rather than a vague promise.

Why it matters for workwear

For anyone kitting out a team, the membrane technology behind a "waterproof" label affects two things that actually matter on site: how long the garment keeps performing, and how it copes with a full shift of sweat and weather at once. Sympatex® is built to deliver both, with an end-of-life plan for the material that most standard waterproofing doesn't offer.
